winning teams, but because they were
good enough to get a look. I have been
an accountant for 17 years, and I
know the importance of having quality
accountants on your team. I wanted
to pass along some information that
in my opinion will be valuable to
high school teams—and for anyone
who might be lucky enough to
recruit the top players in high
school. A few years ago a recruiter
said to me that they looked for
players who excelled in both the
classroom and on the field. Today,
there’s an influx of 1st-grade
teachers who are amazing players
at rec’s, and that’s a new trend.
1st graders can play rec because
they are smaller and can be more
efficient players than in high school.
I believe you will see more rec’s
scheduled for 1st grade teams as
teams take advantage of their
flexible schedule. Another trend I’ve
noticed is more coach recruitment
from JV coaches. Please don’t
squander valuable program minutes
on coaches that don’t hold their
position to a higher standard. If
you have a losing rec team, look
for high-quality players who can
play multiple positions and take
offensive or defensive coordinator
positions. I personally recommend
Texas as a standard to follow. I
spent a year as an academic
advocate for football, basketball,
and baseball, and I found that the
most successful coaches do not run
an athletic empire. Their focus is
on the games, and they hire
support staff to handle admin
work. Not all teams can have
great admin staff, but you need to
know the difference. I was amazed
at how productive some of the
recs were, and the student
athletes were enthusiastic,
compassionate, and loved to
teach. I think those are some of
the most important qualities to
look for. If you are lucky enough
to recruit the best players you can,
aim for the top-level academic
teams in the country, and build
around them. Players such as
Parris Campbell, Tedric Thompson,
and Jarvis Hayes are so passionate
about football and their skills
it is easy to watch them play.
I’ve been fortunate to have

rather learn from someone else who

GREAT MOMENTS in jazz, 70 years of
Smooth jazz, which is the most
popular form of jazz today, has a
long history in Cincinnati. Best-selling jazz composer and pianist Bobby
Olathe was raised on the Southside and won a
piano contest in a local Southern Baptist church
while in high school. His winning entry was his
composition “Jukebox Blues”. It is widely
believed that the late B.B. King was listening
to the single when he decided to make it his
first recording.
Pianist and producer Stewart “Stu” Mervin
and saxophonist John Butcher now are two of
the principal artists associated with this style
of music, which has contributed many
successes in the record charts. No other city
in the United States has more jazz clubs per
capita than Cincinnati. The downtown club
Avenue is the most popular throughout the
year, and the comedy club comedy is nationally
recognized. Recently, American saxophonist
Joe Sample was an honorary guest at a jazz
recital held at the Playhouse Square theater.
Other great jazz acts include the
Southside Slim’s Jazz Band, which has
performed at the Newport Jazz Festival, the
Vanderbilt Jazz Ensemble, and the “Music in
the Louvre” jazz festival with an international
group of musicians.

clubs, phone the “Cincinnati Jazz Scene” at 527-1416.

pumpkin is true to its Spanish name, which means “bud,” and contains the antiherbivorous chemicals philip’t heart anthocyanin and phenol, which account for its red color. some pumpkin experts claim that pumpkin is better suited as a main course than as a dessert because of its tendency to produce fewer seeds if it is eaten whole.
