The following sections explore Photoshop in greater detail, including how to apply layers, work with a few standard effects, and use some basic tools.
Applying Layers
Photoshop’s combination of tools enables you to render all kinds of effects. In fact, you can manage entire designs using layers. Layers give you the ability to create and position multiple objects on the same image or photograph with ease.
In a layer, each area is colored or shaded to create a place where a portion of the image or photograph is cut away. You can make as many layers as you want and apply different effects to each layer individually. Then you can combine the layers to create more complex effects.
Here are the basic steps to apply and edit a layer:
1. Select the Layer tab and click the New Layer icon in the Layers panel.
2. In the New Layer dialog box, name the layer and select the type of the layer, whether it’s opaque or transparent. (See Figure 7-1.)
3. Choose whether you want to display the layer as a blue, white, or black outline around the layer.
4. Click OK.
5. Go back to your image and click the layer thumbnail in the Layers panel to position the layer.
6. To apply an effect to the layer, select the Effects tab. See the next section for more information.
Adding Effects
Photoshop has a few effects that give you more control over your image. These effects include blur, brightness, contrast, color balance, and saturation. You may recognize these effects as they are used by the “new look” for cameras, in which the photographer may have applied a blur filter to a photo. This gives the impression of shallow depth of field in a photo. You can use these effects in photos and even in drawings.
To access the effects, choose Effects ⇒ Effects. You can choose to apply the effect to your entire image or any of your layers.

2. Description of the Prior Art
The manufacture of semiconductor wafers requires precise control of a process to insure that the correct materials are positioned relative to each other. For example, in the manufacture of integrated circuits, gallium arsenide, and other semi-conductor materials are etched by an ion beam, typically a beam of xenon ions. Each wafer requires only a very small amount of gallium arsenide during its manufacture so it is essential that the amount of gas be precisely metered to the ion beam to insure adequate coverage of the wafer.
In the prior art, the amount of gas in a furnace was sensed by reading the conductivity of the gas. That is, the gas was passed through a material or element whose conductivity was dependent on the gas. The gas would pass through the element to a sensing plate and then the conductivity was measured by a first sensor, such as a measuring circuit, which would detect any differences in conductivity and charge a meter. The meter would register the amount of gas or conductivity of the gas. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the meter is a digital microprocessor based controller.
There are many problems with this prior art method of gas sensing. Since the amount of gas depends on the conductivity of the gas, any gas molecules which are stuck in or are carried by air-borne particles will be counted. This can result in a substantial amount of error in the amount of gas being metered.
