while a sea of smoke and confusion sinks pearl harbor, a small group of american planes fight it out with the japanese. some of the planes are shot down and the crews bail out as the plane crashes. one plane bails out and his parachute gets tangled in the tail of another plane going down. the tail rotates around and around and the pilot, who is strapped in, gets pulled out. in an error of judgment, the japanese machine gunner shoots his bullets at him. it doesn’t come out and he still falls. finally his body comes out of the plane and he hits the ground.
it takes a few months for the us to fully realise the scale of this catastrophe and respond to the japanese attack and the philippines the next day. it is only after the emperor hirohito tells the imperial japanese navy that he was not aware of the attack that the us forces are mobilised for the next attack on the philippines.
the film is an adaptation of john logan’s best selling novel. this is his second adaptation of the story, having previously done so in 1998 and 2000, with kevin costner and sam elliott respectively in the title role. both these films were in fact produced by jerry bruckheimer, with denzel washington taking the lead role in the second film.
the film is based on the true story and follows a marine, john basilone (seth fisher), during the attack on pearl harbor. he receives orders to attack and sink the japanese battleship, and is told that he will be the only man on the ship when he goes up. in reality this was due to the fact that the only other man in his patrol was killed in action.
as each world power tries to understand what happened to their friends and allies on the afternoon of december 7th, on the morning of december 8th 1941, the japanese attacks the american fleet in hawaii, in revenge for the american bombing of a japanese diplomatic mission in shanghai on december 2nd 1941.
everyday life in the fleet is interrupted by the attacks, and the navy’s commander, admiral husband kimmel, listens to the radio reports and lets everyone know that the action is “extremely serious” and that “all precautions must be taken”. after the reports from the enemy aircraft and attacks in the pacific have ended, admiral kimmel informs the american public that the us navy will launch an air strike on japan at a later time. however, this will not be until the end of the month.
on the day after, november 30th 1941, the word is out on the streets of washington and a solemn and angry debate is underway in the government about how to move forward. a small group of people meet at the eutaw street home of a writer named ernest hemingway and discuss the situation.
hemingway is a true american classic who has played his part in all aspects of the american way of life. he is a sportsman and will go the whole hog with his writing. he has a unique mix of optimism, cynicism and sheer talent which is why everyone listens to him. however, you’ll be amazed at the way in which he comes out with what is arguably the most infamous quote of the american response to the japanese attack. the quote essentially says that we can’t do much to help, but the u.s. navy is hitting back. anyone who has seen the movie will be able to relate to this.
