In a previous publication, we described the development of 20 BCIs for detecting Burmese pythons [ 12 ]. We used these BCIs to evaluate the predictive value of the BCIs for snake detection in a multibiomarker analysis where mass was included as a covariate in the model. This model, however, only included snakes with a longer total length. To increase the diversity in our data set, we therefore chose BCIs that had been previously tested with snakes that were shorter than snakes from our data set. Thus, the present multibiomarker analysis includes an additional 10 BCIs tested in smaller snakes.
We compared a snake/all-other model with a model including percent fat and scaled fat, and used the snake/all-other model to assess the value of the different BCIs in predicting a snake/all-other vs. snake/non-snake response. We also used percent fat, scaled fat, and residual fat in a multibiomarker analysis for all BCIs to determine whether they were capable of distinguishing snakes from non-snakes and included the snake/all-other models as an additional response class to increase sample size. In the snake/all-other model, we only tested whether the BCI response varied with snake status. In the snake/all-other vs. snake/non-snake model, we tested whether the BCI response was modulated by snake status while controlling for the body condition of the snake. In the multibiomarker analysis, we combined percent fat, scaled fat, and residual fat into a single model to determine if they effectively distinguished snakes from non-snakes. To improve interpretability of the multibiomarker analysis, we multiplied the output of the different BCIs by their respective coefficient estimates and added a constant so that we could examine the relative value of the different BCIs.
