patels love for gujarati verse was sealed when he was 12 years old, while living in the house of an old poet in the city of dharampur. he was introduced to poetry, and spent the next 20 years writing it. he was introduced to gujarati literature by another poet, jivraj mehta. he was introduced to fiction by another great gujarati poet, karsandas kapadia. he was married to shanta mayani patel in june 1942. the couple had a daughter, kusum. he received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the university of bombay.
he joined the indian air force as a civil engineer. as his service was about to end, he traveled to ahmedabad to stay with his friend umashankar joshi. he was introduced to english literature by joshi, and his friendship with him was cemented. he began to write short stories and novels in gujarati, mostly expressing the aspirations of young people. he was a close friend of the famous poet hemant divakar. he was elected to the gujarat legislative assembly in 1962. he was also awarded the sahitya akademi award for his novel kankan.
in the mid-1960s, he wrote his first play, swapna. he moved to bombay in 1967 and wrote his second novel, fakiro, published in 1968. he became a member of the jury of the indian national literary award. he returned to ahmedabad in 1972 to live with his daughter kusum, and taught gujarati at the indian institute of technology, ahmedabad. he moved to vadodara in 1978 to live with his son narayan mayani patel, whom he had adopted. he died in vadodara on 6 april 1989.
he is considered the father of modern gujarati literature. along with his novels, he wrote books on hindu theology and philosophy. he wrote many essays in gujarati, kannada, hindi, english and other languages and published many collections of his essays. he remained independent in his writing.
apart from the published novels, he has written many essays, short stories and novels in kannada and english and published many collections of his essays. his most famous essay is neminath bhagvat-parva (the fifth section of bhagwad gita) published in 1983.
he is an inspiration for many writers in all languages. he has been given many awards and recognition, including the sahitya akademi award for gujarati (1988). in 1981, the government of india honoured him for his contribution to gujarati literature.
in 1932, he got married. he started to do some freelance writing, but for lack of money he focused his focus on writing for magazines. [6] he started to write his first play chandi kankan in 1938. [4] he wrote his last novel bharatiya vanin in 1950. [9] his fourth play malela jeev premiered in 1949. [5]
he received the jnanpith award for his novel manvini bhavai in 1985. [5] he also received the sahitya academy award in 1982 for manvini bhavai and the shiromani award in 1999 for his collection of short stories sukhdukhna sathi.
