a lens developer makes a stack of preprinted lenticular prints. the profiles of the lenses have slight variations for each image to be included in the stack of prints. the stack is then cut to a precise length according to the production specifications, and the surface of the lenticular film is laminated. the surface is both a mirror and polarizing filter, so only the image is readable by the viewer. the individual prints of the stack can then be viewed either by the person who made the print or the person who is going to use the product. the color of the lenses is reversed, so that the image on the side facing up appears blue, the image on the side facing down appears red. the color of the lenticule is reversed so that the image behind the lenticule is red, and the image in front of it is blue. whether this action is applied to printed images or images displayed on a screen is left up to the end user.

there are two types of lenticular printing: flat and flex. the flat style is the traditional lenticular printing method. the flex style allows for bendable print materials. both methods use a special type of plastic called polycarbonate that is transparent and highly resistant to heat. it is also super strong and light in weight. for example, you can create a 3d effect using a glass pan filled with hot water or a 3d cube puzzle.
the type of lenticular printing you use will depend upon your budget and the quality of the product youre creating. for example, the types of lenticulars used in movie production are different than those used for a simple box of dog food. we cover some basic lenticular printing in the following sections.

you can create different effects by varying the type of lenticular and the angles at which theyre viewed. the first step in creating an interlaced image is to create a graphic to place within the lenticulars. think of creating a basic interlaced image as trying to draw a straight line on a piece of paper with your finger. a first attempt will be a shaky line.
