acer is doing something similar to samsung with the liquid jade primo–it has a fingerprint reader embedded on the side of the phone, not the back. while it doesnt obviously move the button around, it still provides additional protection for the front of the phone. the dual fingerprint sensors used on the pixel and the iphone x are more secure, of course, but i appreciated the extra effort acer made to add another layer of security.

acer’s liquid jade primo, priced at 569 euro, includes a microsd card slot, so you can expand the phone’s storage (you do have to buy the surface dock, which is $69, though). the windows 10 mobile software is full of cool new features, including screen-shake detection for switching apps, app reading lines for more efficient reading, and hands-free typing. there’s also a feature called say again, which seems to work well, but seemed a bit odd when i tried it in the moment. another highlight is the improved windows hello login, which allows you to log in to the phone with facial recognition or your pin. just as a reminder, windows hello lets you log in with your face, eyeballs, or fingerprint without having to type in a password or pin.

windows 10 mobile now has a native sleep mode and a quick toggling option between power and display, similar to how android does it. but it has one critical missing feature–the ability to adjust the volume. the liquid jade primo has the same annoying speaker port that all smartphones have, so at least you can rock up some headphones.

aside from being a bit thick–1.18 inches–the liquid jade primo is thin enough to slip in a shirt pocket and not be an eyesore. the gorilla glass screen isnt particularly vibrant, but it does have a “dual photo” mode that lets you copy your front and back cameras together. you can also use the gorilla glass screen as a secondary display for a second phone or a laptop. thats a perfect solution for looking at information and keeping an eye on the road when youre driving.

acer says its liquid jade primo will run android apps, but doesn’t offer a software solution for android-to-windows 10 continuum that’s anywhere near as powerful as what microsoft already provides. if it wants to attract android users, acer needs to bring android closer in to the windows ecosystem.
still, a continuum-centric phone that can double as a desktop and lets you run android apps is more compelling than a continuum-centric phone that can’t run android apps. and its price tag of 569 euros (~$620) is almost half the cost of the lowest-priced surface pro 4 models (€666), $699 for the highest-priced ones (€879). for the average shopper, that’s worth asking: is the incremental cost worth it?
of course, if you spend more money, you can get an even better phone — like the new lg g6, which doesn’t come with a two-day shipping guarantee like the acer. of course, you might also want a desktop, a monitor, and maybe a windows tablet too.
at 6.1 pounds, the padfone 2 is around 1 pound lighter than the lumia 950 and 17 pounds lighter than the 5.56-pound air 2. the 2,300mah battery has a respectable 33.6 hours of talk time , and also sports wireless charging.
the padfone 2’s new secondary camera consists of a 12.2-megapixel main camera (rear) and an 8-megapixel (front). the phone’s dual rear speakers are upgraded from 2.1 to 5.1, and there’s a new 3,600mah battery on board.
the battery life is another big advantage of the acer liquid jade primo over the lumia 950. our battery test was conducted according to the power usage profile (p-pwr) in windows 10 mobile in the laptop mode. battery charging capacity test was performed at “normal” current, and battery discharging capacity was tested at”normal” current. “normal” current is defined as 600ma, which is the average power draw for both the laptop mode and phone mode when user is using the device normally.
