but, more than any of that, grimm was about family. despite its supernatural twist, grimm was mostly about a group of people who got together and became a family. in a way, grimm was a bit likethe walking dead in that it tried to take the concept of a family and apply it to those outside the regular social circles. in grimm ‘s case, it was the residents of the eponymous town. but, regardless of its take on familial relationships, grimm was ultimately about the individuals that made up the family, and their interactions with each other. in fact, the show’s creator and star, david greenwalt, had already expressed a desire to end the series before he and co-creator steve goldsmith finished writing the final script. however, it wasn’t until the cast decided that they didn’t want the show to end that things changed.
the first season of grimm was netflixs first foray into original fairy tale programming, and the second season was the networks first. however, when the second season ended, it left netflix without a fairy tale series.
Season one of Grimm was released in 2016 and focused heavily on the case of a murder in the faerie tales while the second season delved deeper into the legacy of the twins who would become the legendary detectives of the show. After the impressive first season, the third season focused on the case of the homeless man, who turns out to be a werewolf, in the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The fourth season of Grimm focused on the cases of a father who becomes a serial killer after being bitten by his son and a school teacher who encounters a killer clown. This was followed by the fifth season which mainly focused on the struggles and cases of the three brothers who would become the detectives of the show. The sixth and final season returned to the fairy tale roots, focusing on the cases of the family of the children of the famous author, but would end on a major twist which would change the course of the lives of many characters.
The first six seasons of Grimm aired on NBC before it was cancelled in 2017. This was one of the network’s most popular shows, making it a stark contrast with another cancelled show, Law & Order: SVU.
Because it was a joint production between NBC and the White Wolf Production company, Grimm remained on the air despite the eventual release of new seasons rather than an actual cancellation. Because of the TV contracts with the original creator, the new seasons were released on Prime Video and the NBC app on smartphones and tablets.
However, as with many shows, the ability to release new seasons depends on the rights, and with the rights still owned by the White Wolf company, there was no way to continue releasing new seasons of the show. With the new releases of seasons five and six, which came out on Prime Video in 2018 and 2019, the show was cancelled as a complete entity. With several of its stars moving on to other projects, including The CW show, Grimm came to a close.
