Nice review but after upgrading to LR5.2 RC I think performance is better than with LR4. Working on a project with 1500 D800 NEFs my impression is that the smart previews increase speed while working in the Developer mode – in Lib. mode however everything slows because the JPEG previews are used. So far I am not sure how the Jpegs are used as previews when you have the smart previews (DNGs) available. But have to say that I am happy with 5.2 RC although I will say bye-bye to LR the day they make it part of CC.

I could name a thousand other photo editing programs, but Windows has become dominant. So I’m reviewing the major programs today, starting with Photoshop. I’m using the 2017 version—I can’t quite imagine how the newer versions differ.

A photographer who spends even one day doing post-production work, then has to transition out to a different toolkit with final print delivery, can find herself overwhelmed by the time and cost.
There are very few camera makers who design an interchangeable lens system larger than the APS-C format that dominates the market, and the number is shrinking. So it is important to have programs that work with both APS-C and full-frame sensors. Lightroom and Camera RAW are very useful, but they don’t work with film emulsions (they don’t even work with digital negative conversion to an emulsion-based film like C41, which anyone who shoots old 120 film knows is absolutely essential). Likewise, Photoshop CS3, CS4, CS5, and CS6 didn’t work with large format (36×24) images and 5×4 canvases from a recent 3D shoot.
