the third of godards films inspired by the novel le samourai, this began as a very different project from the other two. characters and historical figures (including the assassin of the french president) were incorporated and the resulting film went on to create a turbulent and contentious atmosphere on location. le chasseur auvsi la chinoise (1966) and band of outsiders (12:30pm, april 7, 2004) were impossibly connected with this one. it was this film godard made most quickly and without a clear idea of what he wanted. maybe this was why he chose to shoot le samourai from the point of view of a character who would have been invisible, but who insisted on having an audible voice, played by michel subor (a character from the earlier film). there would be no apparent point, except perhaps that in this film, godard as director was as invisible as his fictional assassin would be.
see bobs sole 1974 feature, the passenger, which he wrote, directed, edited, and stars in with james mason as a free-spirited traveler with a bad headache. compulsive elliptical improvisation and a gorgeous soundtrack by jazz musician miles davis underscore a fanciful tale whose layers are only peeled back at the final reel. meanwhile, bobs style has shifted abruptly from sharp, self-knowing satire (a satirical take on the dirty harry movies that would turn out to be lonesome cowboys and, when another film happened to call itself lonesome cowboys, he was in no position to object) to a dreamy, free-ranging style. but the transitions are seamless, and the movie is marked by masons intense charisma. jeffrey bernard friday, march 31, 4:30pm

truffaut is known for staging mesmerizing scenes with a minimum of dialogue, and he orchestrates avec l amour with remarkable symmetry and grace. but, like any great work of art, the film is about more than its formal elements. it questions how young adults can find love in a world of cynical hedonism, and how precious is that love. it also challenges our own ideals about what it means to love. avec l amour is not just one of the most complex and ambitious movies of the decade, but one of the most powerful.
highlights include orson wells seminal collaboration with godard la chinoise, oscar-winning my night at maudsens oens with jean dujardin, and the rarely seen western thundering herds starring alain delon, laud, and pierre brasseur.

a pair of american robbers, a likeable and funny son of the west coast, and a likeable and good-natured thief of the east coast, team up for a hold up. the east coast? an emaciated college student (bruno kirby), wannabe writer (j. hoberman), and hotshot gambler (brett halsey). while the movie itself has a distinct low-budget feel (the film was shot for $26,000) and only once does it take place in an actual bank, it remains an admirable attempt at a big-budget béte-à-ête. one of the best films of 1964, it was a sort of dry run for the ostentatious, boozy, and inspiring easy rider a year later. print courtesy of the bayerisches filmarchiv thursday, april 6, 12:00pmfriday, april 7, 4:30pm saturday, april 8, 11:00am sunday, april 9, 2:00pm
