Extra Quality Alan Parsons Sound Check 2 Audio Test And Demonstration CD 2003

The first track I’ve chosen to include on my reference disc is a recording of the BBC Singers, which I regard as one of the most precise sound recordings of choral material on any test disc. The disc comprises four tracks: the male voices, and a solo cor anglais, timpani and organ, with seven polyphony lines (four individual treble parts and three bass parts). The track lengths vary from about 12 seconds for the bass lines, to about 11 seconds for the cor anglais line. The recording is contained in two different formats, and I’ve chosen to include both. This allows the listener to hear how the two differ. The first is a single track of the full performance, arranged in 5.1 surround, which contains the full extended score, and the second has three channels of stereo, which present only part of the full score. These two tracks seem to show that the single surround version sounds better in terms of soundstage, while the stereo seems to take a somewhat more detailed and precise approach, although it does lack the orchestral bass which is so important for this and most choral recordings. The solo cor anglais provides a good indication of what to listen for, and the arrangement of the two top percussion pieces (timpani and organ) provide comments about the potential for timbre in terms of juxtaposition – the timpani’s bright, substantive sound is in contrast with the restrained and solid sound of the organ. Two further tracks, two-track autographed copies of the stereo version of the same recording, are included to demonstrate the difference in implementation (and presentation) which audiophiles can make with the selection and processing of high-end equipment.

A problem with early eight-channel A/D converters was that they were generally more sensitive (and had a narrower bandwidth) than the final D/A converter which was capable of reconstructing the original eight-channel information. This problem was solved by the introduction of a complete and multiplexed splitter, capable of separating and recombining the eight channels in any desired manner. One way of illustrating the possibilities is with the use of two channels – similar to the stereo track presented in this disc.
