The application of green chemistry principles is not limited to the pharmaceutical industry, but it was originally used in the pharmaceutical industry. Much of the work on green chemistry in the pharmaceutical industry has been based on the work of the ACS GCIPR, the National Organic Standards Board, the FDA, and the World Health Organization, among others. The pharmaceutical industry has long used the following green chemistry principles to ensure that its product manufacturing process is environmentally sustainable. However, the principles have also had a major impact on safety and efficacy due to the close relationship between the environmental sustainability, the chemical transformation, and the desired product function.
The pharmaceutical industry has used some green chemistry principles for some time. These principles have become more important as the industry works to meet key goals. The most important goals within the pharmaceutical industry include: adopting sustainable practices and finding affordable, safe, effective, and meaningful alternatives, and promoting these new practices in our academic institutions, public health initiatives, and regulatory agencies.
Each point of departure, such as a library, research facility, or manufacturing plant, along the continuum of the pharmaceutical product life cycle requires the same set of considerations. Green chemistry principles enhance this process and ensure that we are designing and improving processes and products for the future by meeting new goals, while remaining concerned with current goals. The resulting benefits include: products and processes that use fewer and fewer hazardous chemicals, products and processes that are more effective and efficient, products and processes that are consistently manufactured and transported in ways that minimize potential harm or contamination, products and processes that are affordable and efficient, and products and processes that are environmentally sound.
