death note is a film that deserves a perfect 10 and a 15. it even won an owaranai hito award for best animation film. it is a fantastic piece of art. with that said, it was obviously rushed into production. there are times where the narrative is choppy and ill-thought out. some scenes are just poorly written, and the editing is often just plain bad. it’s obvious the film had a tiny budget. it’s missing a lot of fine details that i would expect from a feature-length film. it’s also possibly the only anime i’ve seen where the film uses a “child directed” style. there are so many things to love about death note but it’s just below the standard of the original anime. sadly, this film is likely to be shown alongside the anime in theaters and not the anime itself. but if you’re really curious about the director’s view of death note then it’s worth checking out. you’ll either love it or hate it, but you’ll definitely understand the film’s purpose.
death note follows a point of view that is not the traditional, first-person narrative. instead, the viewpoint shifts among the characters involved. there is no one person who is the protagonist, and the action occurs through their many viewpoints. this allows the viewer to be immersed in the narrative and emotionally connected to the characters.
one of the most unique elements of death note is that the characters are devoid of their original personality. in each death note episode, an undercover public officer wears a death note and kills people in the name of law. shortly after the deaths, the officer is given a clean slate and, then, returns to life as a completely different person with a different name and personality. in true death note tradition, the person who first becomes a death note cop also becomes the most powerful death note user. but the first death note user is initially transformed into an ordinary person. the approach provides a strong psychological effect, which is why, in life, the average japanese citizen is completely unaware of death note and its existence. but, in the anime, the viewers are compelled to wonder if a character is about to be blown up because theres no way to know what happens to death notes after theyre used. it creates a fascinating plot device, reminiscent of inception.

this version features a completely different and fresh story for the misa amane character and more emphasis on its humor and action. i thought that this version was very enjoyable, but i preferred the original. i also found it hard to relate to misa amane during this version. that said, this is a good entry point if you’re a fan of the character. for those unfamiliar with the death note story, the 2011 anime is available on netflix as the companion piece to the manga.
in this version, ryuzaki is a hologram projected on a part of l’s computer, like in l’s dream. during the day ryuzaki acts like l and, after a few months, he encounters the real l who opens up to him, becomes a mentor figure, and asks ryuzaki to take over running the death note. when ryuzaki says he would rather continue as l’s hologram, l tells him that he was on l’s side at the beginning of the story. therefore, he is no longer l’s enemy, so ryuzaki will always be a friend.
