Although it's a really old tool and has some sketchy options that made it initially troublesome for us to figure out how it works, the app turns out to be a pretty solid text editor with emphasis on security, as long as you don't mind the lack of most text editing features.

Engulfed in a simplistic interface that makes you feel you traveled back in time to the era of Windows 95, CryptNote had no sort of trouble running in Windows 10 in our tests. As said earlier, it might look plain but it's not so easy to discover the mechanisms behind it.
We won't bore you with details about standard text editing options since there's nothing to mention. One word of advice would be to stay away from Ctrl+Z (undo) because this seems to erase everything. Ctrl+A (select all) doesn't work either but Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V (copy and paste) are good to go.
As such, text can be written or pasted. We're leaning toward the second option due to the risk of accidentally deleting everything. Next, before saving the text to file, you are prompted to set a passphrase and confirm it, and this is where things become interesting.
Modest text editor but solid encryption tool
Firstly, CryptNote supports the AES/Rijndael algorithm, which means that the password will be difficult to crack. Nevertheless, it's recommended to make it as complex as possible (lower and upper case letters, symbols, numbers, many characters).
Secondly, we're looking at how it works: the saved, encrypted file can only be opened with this program. After launching CryptNote and selecting the file to open, you have to enter the correct key. However, if you specify different passwords for different files, you have to remember all keys (one key cannot be assigned to multiple files at once). If this makes things complicated, you should probably turn to a password manager to keep track of all keys.
All in all, the text editor itself is far from good but, combined with the AES/Rijndael encryption method, it makes document security a breeze.

Why just encrypt files? That’s definitely not all it can do! Allow us to explain a few more features.
Encryption
Encryption is performed by using AES/Rijndael (AES with 256-bit key) with CBC mode. It is used for both textual data such as passwords and also binary data such as images, videos, or even documents. If you’re using AES/CBC with a key size of 256 bits or greater, you should be safe from decryption.
CryptNote works with hexadecimal strings, as well as characters and numbers, thus making it compatible with a vast array of data. It also accepts byte arrays, which makes it compatible with system APIs such as CryptProtectData and CryptUnprotectData.
The maximum file size supported is 5 GB. Currently, there are no options to change the block size or preload. However, this function might be added in the future.

Decryption
The AES/Rijndael algorithm is used for decrypting the contents of an encrypted file. The use of PBKDF2 for the key derivation makes the algorithm very safe. Nevertheless, please note that you should not input the derivation key (the password) you’ve used for encrypting the file and ask for a key with no use of PBKDF2 for decryption. Using the wrong key could be a big security risk.

UPDATE: This seems to have been the intended behavior from Google Play for the past year or so.
It sounds like you’ve upgraded an APK that you originally installed from Google Play, but it seems you can’t do that on a newer version of the OS.
This is not just for CryptNote, but for any APK that you are converting that has a Google Play signature.
The only fix that I have found for this is to just upgrade the Android version for the apps you want. For your case, you’d want to upgrade to a version that is higher than that which the APK you are converting will support, so you don’t encounter the problem in the first place.
If you have the source APK, you’ll be able to get the source code back from that and recompile it. Otherwise, you’ll have to create a new version of the APK that will be higher than the version of the OS you are running.
My advice is to upgrade the Android version before you try to compile it. This will at least give you the best chance of not having a problem compiling.
In your specific case, it seems you have Android Oreo installed, but the APK you are converting has been built for Android Nougat. If that is the case, the best thing you can do is just upgrade to Android
