during the clinical service life of the crowns, the cantilever design often led to debonding at the restoration-cement-tooth interface. in order to analyze the effects of cantilever design, cantilevers of 2, 4, 6 and 8 mm were prepared. the cantilevers were inserted at the center of the crowns’ occlusal surface, between lingual and buccal cusp inclines, in the same manner as for the monolithic crowns. they were submitted to a fatigue test, with cyclic loads of 350 n. two crowns were prepared for each cantilever size and the fatigue test was performed after 1,500,000 cycles. the specimens were inspected under a stereomicroscope (mz6 leica) after 1,500,000 and 2,000,000 cycles. the specimens were excluded from the study if any of the following situations were observed: catastrophic or cohesive fracture of the crown, indenters debonded or cracked or the adhesive system degraded. the amount of adhesive remaining on the crown surface was measured after finishing the test by using a wet gauze. the amount of adhesive was assessed by subtracting the remaining thickness of the adhesive from the initial thickness. differences between the measured thickness and the exact thickness measured by digital caliper were always less than 0.05 mm. specimens were stored in water during the fatigue test. after the test, the specimens were removed from the mold and any residual adhesive was removed by hand-rubbing the surface.
