En route to Ryloth, the Codebreaker notices the PDA contains a comprehensive list of the crime syndicates and their location, and starts wondering who he can ask about it on board the Falcon. Instead of, say, going to the Mos Eisley cantina, he chats a little bit about the information in front of Maz to make it seem like he’s knowledgeable about it. Soon enough, his conversation with Maz and his skills as a codebreaker allows him to get confirmation that the list does indeed come from the Maz’s private files and that he is the person who can obtain a decryption key to the files and get the information that Maz has been unwilling to share.

Maz is far too paranoid to pay for an encrypted government file at that point, so the Codebreaker just has to go ask the New Republic for the key to decode the Maz’s files and he’ll have their blackmail machines on them in seconds. That becomes a bit of a game of cat-and-mouse for Maz and the Codebreaker as they continue to move from place to place, with Maz wanting to keep the key a secret and the Codebreaker wanting to make sure he has the key and protecting it. It’s fascinating to watch how Maz tries to keep the file away from the Codebreaker, especially as the two have become best friends. They even discuss the possibility of a murder-for-hire, which the Codebreaker is somewhat reluctant about though he does tell Maz that it is in his best interests to do such a thing and ask for more information if it becomes necessary.

The Codebreaker’s quest eventually leads the two of them to a room with Maz’s big, locked filing cabinet that seems to house her private files. There, the Codebreaker finds a space where Maz stored her precious files. Inside the cabinet, he finds a keypad which he can use to get into the cabinet and finally get access to the files. As he starts to decrypt the file, he’s surprised to find that not only is the file decrypted, but the decryption key also includes which of the files need to be decrypted, who did it, and how many times they must do it for it to decrypt entirely.

The Codebreaker features a patented flyback chronograph with a GMT hand and a date display. A flying hand escapement allows the chronograph to work correctly without using a traditional lever. The flyback was thought up by engineer Marcel Beckers who created it for the first synchronized clock to run continuously for a number of years at the airport in Linderhof, Germany. It has two subregisters in a low profile, nestled between the date window and main display. On the dial is 24-hour scale, a seconds function, a 30-minute totalizer, and a date window. It also has a porthole at 3 oclock. The Codebreaker has a titanium bezel, like all of Bremonts watches. This is a much stronger and less expensive material than ceramic.
An increase in active voices led in part by Codebreaker s Smuggler’s Guide caused the police chief to hire some new men, and that was the end of it. The women of the Femme Fatale were certain that they would soon be free, but the marks of their labor remained. The Femme Fatale s inner coils were damaged beyond use. Codebreaker s gamble had paid off.
More than a decade later, Codebreaker sets out to infiltrate the haunts of the Black Sun and hopes to find a woman strong enough to return the codes. But he soon learns that the femme fatale s code was a lie, that she never cracked the codes, and that she is nothing more than another spy. It will take a little time and a little more money to untangle the mystery.
Archeologists working with the Bletchley Trust have found the first known reference to the Bremont Codebreaker logo, dating to the autumn of 1941. They discovered it on a series of documents that detail the activities of a decryption team based at Bletchley Park under the leadership of Alan Turing and Harry Hinsley. A pair of matching hands was engraved on the documents with a crown placed in the center. Upon seeing the bejewelled hands, one of the archeologists commented, “Or maybe not…!”
