call of duty’s a bit of a strange franchise in that there’s no main story besides the one you’re telling in the current games, and you’re never really sure what’s going on. the first game was a world war ii shooter where every multiplayer map was an actual historical location. that format continued in world at war, which was, in effect, two games in one with the arcade-like rts mode, combat mission: red watch, and the fast-paced, multiplayer shooter. those three modes were all that modern warfare offered, and the single-player was a post-cold war era spin-off named close quarters with a light-hearted tone that tried to make things a little more accessible to the casual player. it was a major success, and the world saw the release of black ops, another world war ii shooter, which was also a huge seller. those two games were quickly followed by call of duty 4: modern warfare. that marked a major shift in gameplay, and while the single-player was great, the biggest change was found in the multiplayer, which shifted away from the location-based maps of world at war, retaining the fast-paced, action-oriented feel of black ops, with a map rotation.
