the wii u version of captain.toad: treasure tracker removes the wii u touchscreen on the wii remote, and attempts to maximize the traditional control scheme by using the controllers’ direction pads for gamepad-style buttons.

the game only supports full controller input, so once you swap to captain.toad you can’t use the wiimote/nunchuk (or the wii balance board’s accelerometer) to move the game. the wii remote can be used to manually select what you want to move in-game, though, which is helpful if you’re trying to get the gamepad’s controls to work for the first time.

Nintendo has never shied away from creating game systems that aren’t simply defined by a single type of gameplay. The Wii Remote was never a golf game, the Wii U is not a game controller. The Nintendo 64, N64/Gamecube and Gameboy-Advance-SP all boasted a wide range of games, and the last Nintendo console to lack its own unique gameplay umbrella was the Game Boy Color. Well now that console is making a comeback, and it’s time to ensure that this time around the system incorporates an all-ages-friendly approach to gameplay. It’s hard to be cynical towards Nintendo when they do things right. Come next year when Nintendo releases their new handheld/home console hybrid device, I expect them to reinstate the Gameboy line to the franchises like Mario and Zelda. And if they do, look for Nintendo to take its sweet time launching a games-for-games-sake system with them. Wouldn’t that be nice?
And now, onto the relevant release info… The Wii U version of Captain Toad comes with 20 of the game’s unique levels from Super Mario 3D World, and a handful of additional puzzles. This is accompanied by an online leaderboard and a few more puzzles.
Overall, Captain.Toad.Treasure.Tracker.[Wii.U].[WUD] isn’t an amazing port, it’s just a perfectly competent one. It’s fun and somewhat entertaining, but if you ask me, I think the original game was much better.
So, the difficulty level can be somewhat intimidating at times, especially at first. But if you can overcome that and really look past the odd difficulty level, you’ll find that the game does have quite a bit going for it. There are three difficulty levels, each with their own difficulty setting of Green Stars, Red Stars, and Blue Stars. Blue Stars are challenging in their own right, and are pretty difficult at times, especially early on. That being said, you can progress the game without Blue Stars, and eventually unlock the second and third difficulty levels. This is also the only way to go for a \”No Hint\” mode. Instead, each puzzle has a number of runs in which the players can attempt, each with a Hint rating to go along with it. On the Wii U, you can have as many as 4 puzzle runs active at once, even if you have no Blue Stars. And if you do have any Blue Stars, you’ll find that you can have up to 4 runs active at once, as well.
