The present invention relates to preparation of thin-film electroluminescent (TFEL) devices, and more particularly, to a method for the preparation of TFEL devices that minimize the time of deposition and dark current problems encountered in TFEL devices as well as reduce the number of processing steps involved in the fabrication of TFEL devices.
2. Discussion of the Prior Art
An electroluminescent device is a light-emitting diode or a similar device which makes use of the electroluminescent effect. These devices are currently being used in many applications including image display and the like. As those skilled in the art will recognize, the term electroluminescent device is used to describe various types of devices that exhibit the electroluminescent effect. As an example, TFEL devices are “cold-cathode” electroluminescent devices where the light emission is due to the impact of electrons emitted from the cathode upon phosphor particles of the device deposited on the anode. A typical TFEL is described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,228,359 to Yoshida. A TFEL display is a matrix display device which consists of an array of pixels or dots formed by a row of anodes, a column of cathodes, and phosphor layers deposited on the anodes in correspondence with the cathodes. When one cathode is activated, the electrons released from the cathode bombard the phosphor layer deposited on the anodes and cause the phosphor to emit light. The image on the display is a function of the location of the activated pixels and the display is read only when the pixels are activated.
Much work has been accomplished in the field of TFEL displays in order to improve the luminosity of the devices and reduce the number of processing steps involved in making the device. However, the devices currently being manufactured require deposition of about 25,000 light-emitting and/or phosphor particles onto anodes formed on substrates each having a 100 cm.sup.2 surface area. A time consuming problem is the difficulty of forming a uniform layer of the light-emitting and/or phosphor particles and the subsequent anodes on such a large substrate.
