the band was planning to release their third album eagle vs. dragon in august 2011. however, the studio sessions were not continued and the idea was postponed. then, in 2011, a7x were re-energized with the release of rock never dies, now with a new drummer (m. shadows of m shadows) and a new bass player (justin foley). [8]
the band announced the release of the ep the stage with the first single a place to bury strangers, through a trailer on youtube. the stage was released on march 21, 2012, with the official music video for a place to bury strangers as a bonus.
“in 2010, the members of avenged sevenfold started thinking about what they wanted to do next with the band,” says guitarist zacky. “as the band rehearsed new songs, a set of demos was developed. the entire set was recorded in 2011. following the addition of a new bassist, we had to revisit the demos. the new album is almost finished and with the addition of a new drummer and second guitarist, the experience continues to develop.”
nightmare became the band’s fourth album, though it did not have the release date announced. the recording sessions began in the fall of 2012, after the stage release. nightmare was produced by josh wilbur and, in the past, has been produced by the band, most notably for sounding the seventh trumpet. [9]
the tracklist of nightmare included nine tracks from the twenty-four tracks recorded for the stage. one song did not make it in its entirety and, while the tracklisting shows nine songs, the album had a running time of only thirty-one minutes. [10] the track monster was released as the album’s first single, while an accompanying music video has been released for it. [11]
