History
What is now known as AutoCAD was originally known as “DRAW.”
During a presentation at the NBSE Symposium in Washington DC, one of the architects of the computer graphics industry, Don Berry, presented a copy of the initial AutoCAD source code which had been on his office wall for some years. In 1981, when Don Berry started the development of DRAW, the graphics industry was not very sophisticated. There were very few people who had mastered the art of computer graphics for the desktop, and Don Berry was one of those few people. The earliest versions of AutoCAD were one of a kind and somewhat primitive. Later versions were developed by Nick Milne, Don Berry, and many other programmers.
The first working version of AutoCAD was released in December 1982, on a series of PDP-11 minicomputers. For the first time, CAD software ran on a desktop computer rather than on a graphics terminal. A few years later, AutoCAD became the de facto standard for computer-aided drafting.
AutoCAD was originally designed to create graphics that could be used on low resolution displays and printers (in the 1980s, the cost of laser printers and CRT displays was relatively high). Since then, AutoCAD has grown to support many different graphic techniques, including 2D drawings, 2D and 3D models, layouts, and 3D visualizations.
Licensing
AutoCAD is offered both as a retail package (and is priced accordingly) and as a perpetual license. AutoCAD LT, which has similar capabilities, is available only as a perpetual license.
