Although designed primarily as a desktop program, AutoCAD has been ported to several other platforms and operating systems. In 1996, Autodesk released AutoCAD X. This version of the program introduced a graphical user interface (GUI) and the concept of views. Views were mapped collections of tools and components, designed to perform a specific task. Tools were draggable and resizable, and could be combined and rearranged within views to achieve a desired result.

The latest version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, was introduced in 2005 and has also been ported to other platforms. In 2016, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2020. AutoCAD LT is still marketed and supported by Autodesk. AutoCAD LT is freely available, but uses the AutoCAD 2020 GUI and license terms.

AutoCAD was discontinued as a standalone desktop program in 2019, with the release of AutoCAD 2020. AutoCAD LT continued as a standalone program until 2020, when it too was discontinued and replaced by AutoCAD 2020.

History

In 1982, John Walker, Autodesk’s technical director, and Don Hopkins, director of technical engineering, began working on an automated graphical design and drafting system for Autodesk that would eventually become AutoCAD. Within one year, AutoCAD was completed and shipped for use on the Apple II, IBM PC XT, and Hewlett Packard MP-11 in 1983. This was followed by the release of an enhanced version, AutoCAD II, in 1985. It was the first CAD program to support the 3D Viewer and the Windows GUI. AutoCAD II was used for tasks such as architectural design, small-scale engineering, and drafting.

In 1988, the first version of AutoCAD III, released for the Macintosh in 1989, was based on the GIS (Geographic Information System) technology in Microsoft Excel.

In 1990, AutoCAD IV, released for the Macintosh, was the first version to be widely distributed. It was designed for engineers, architects, and other professionals who worked with three-dimensional (3D) CAD, engineering, and mechanical design. It supported more than 200 commands and 3D modeling, and began a tradition of adding more and more commands over the years.

DXF is the native file format for AutoCAD, which is available in two modes, “native” mode and “raw” mode.

Notes and Updates

The Autodesk software doesn’t have a dedicated key.
If you want to activate the program using a different user than the one you used to install the software then you have to activate a different account that is the user that is registered.
