I’m working through the K&R C and I have a few questions about the exercise from that book:
1.1.1 Construct an array whose elements are the natural numbers, each
indexed by its rank (0 to n−1, inclusive) so that we can conveniently
compute the rank and cumulative sum of a given array. Also, create a
function that, given an array and a rank, returns the cumulative sum
of that array.
The book gives the solution, but it seems to be based on some deeper knowledge about the implementation of the nat (aka natural, aka integer) type than the authors expected.
Question 1: Is there any reason to assume that an array of size n is of type nat[n] or nat?
If we apply the function to an array with (n+1) values, we get nat[n+1] as the result. It is clear that n is used as a variable to bind nat[n] to the array, but I can’t see any reason why that should have to be the case. The array is of type nat[n], so the compiler should be able to bind n to an array of n values. Is there a reason that this isn’t the case?
This is because the authors of C were trying to design a language that matched existing mathematical notation, in which addition and subtraction, for example, are done by zero-based indexing, or -1 in one’s head. K&R did not want to define the type as “array of n nat’s”, since that would not match mathematics, but “array of n integers” would match mathematics (and would allow automatic indexing by zero-based integer values).
If we consider that, in C, arrays are sequences of objects that are indexed by integers, then it makes sense that, in the case of K&R’s problem, the sequence of numbers is of type nat[n], since the values of this sequence would be indexed by the integers 0 through n-1, inclusive. However, in C, the type of an array is an array type, not an array of an array of… type. Note that
