## **Dealing with Layers**

As mentioned, Photoshop uses layers. Layers are like layers of film in a slide projector. Each layer is a separate “image” made up of pixels (it’s also known as an image layer). A layer can be any of the following:

• An image layer

• A graphic style layer

• A clipping mask layer

• A selection mask layer

Each layer can be assigned a _fill_ color.

Layers can be layered by dragging and dropping them onto other layers. By selecting a layer and then clicking the “Layer from below” command from the Layers panel menu, you can drag and drop that layer from one file to another. You can also use the “Layer via cut” or “Layer via paste” commands. From any file, you can drag and drop graphic style layers and selection layers into other files. You can also use the “Layer via copy” command.

The easiest way to create a new layer is to select a blank area of the image by double-clicking in the drawing area or by using the “lasso tool” (as mentioned in the next bullet). You can then click the New Layer button or press Ctrl+N. Alternatively, you can click the New Layer icon in the Layers panel toolbar.

To change the color of a layer, select the layer and click the “Layer palette” icon in the Layers panel toolbar to open the Layer palette, as shown in Figure 5-3. Then click the foreground or background color box to select the desired color.

You can also change the layer’s fill color by selecting the layer and clicking the “Invert” button on the Layers panel toolbar. If you have the “Invert Layers” option enabled (usually checked by default), then you can invert all layers by clicking the Invert All Layers button in the Layers panel. Requirements

Before we begin, you need to make sure that you have enough RAM on your computer as Photoshop uses up a lot of system resources when you work with a lot of images and when you work with images that have very large file size. You can check out the specifications of your computer before you buy it to make sure that you have enough RAM.

Furthermore, you need an Intel-compatible processor (Windows) and 64 bit (Linux and Mac). This is what we’ll be using. You can use almost any version of Photoshop, although Photoshop and Photoshop Lightroom are the best programs to learn Photoshop. However, if you don’t like it, you can always try alternative free programs. Some of them are free from the Adobe Community sites.

You may need a Windows computer to use Photoshop, however, you can try it on your Mac or Linux. To get Photoshop on Mac or Linux, you have a few options. You can use Photoshop via Adobe Creative Cloud or use the Photostitch and Photoshop download option.

A lot of alternative programs are already available for Mac and Linux as well. You can use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) for Mac and Linux and get a free graphic editor for Linux and a free graphic editor for Mac. However

The 7th annual Battle of the Baton Rouge Bands will be held at The Loft at Kajun’s in Lake Charles. You will have the opportunity to vote for your favorites in 5 categories. The categories are:
1) best and worst band
2) best and worst singer
3) best and worst song
4) best and worst visual display
5) best and worst stage show

The winning bands and singers will receive prizes from Big D-Ab, Kajun’s, Greg Cooper, CCEDF, and MRF. The stage show and visual display categories will be declared by the crowd.

The voting is done exclusively by freewheeling votes which will be tallied as soon as the event is over. Voting will be accepted from midnight to 12am on May 19. Voting takes place at www.BattleofTheBatonRouge.com.

We want your opinions about the bands and singers so that we can make some suggestions as to who to invite back for the next Battle. How to change the value of a member variable without re-initialization of the class?

I have a class:
class MyClass
{
int m_Value;
private int m_SomeProperty;
public:
int get_Value();
void set_Value(int value);
};

This class contains a member variable. But I want to be able to change that value without changing the value of this variable, so:
MyClass m_Object;
int m_Value;

m_Object.set_Value(m_Value + 1);

m_Object.set_Value(m_Value + 0.1); // also sets m_Object’s m_Value to m_Value + 1

m_Object.get_Value(); // still returns m_Value

Is that possible?

A:

No, it isn’t possible, because the variable m_Value is a member of your class, and you cannot change any member of an instance of a class. You can use a pointer to a member though, but that still wouldn’t change the value of your member variable.
You should however be aware that the m_Value member variable is usually private. So changing the value of the member variable m_Value on an instance of MyClass actually would not affect the value of m_Value for any other instance of MyClass, because it is only accessible within the MyClass class.
In the following example, I have a class MyClass which contains a private member variable, m_Value. I use MyClass instances in two functions:
