the music of bajirao mastani is an amalgam of popular and classical instruments. almost all the songs are by devotional music composer lalitha sahaas, who also has the song in bajo bala. other popular composers include mayank rajan “premi”, anju majumdar “imaaj”, kailash kher “tumhari ek nanhi”, onir raj “din dhadke” and sanjay jogia “toonkar”. with the exception of a couple of songs, none of them are specially crafted “ramshah” compositions. however, they add to the authenticity of the film. all the songs are meaningful and the chorus work is excellent. with a good band of boys, the music is so good that one forgets the presence of any artistes.
bajirao mastani being the first of bhansali’s projects in the post-aashiqui era, the director doesn’t have to face the “parachute” syndrome and can experiment with his story without much interference. and he certainly does it with utmost sincerity. the script of the film is in form; it’s not a typical love story. it’s a story on relationships and conflicts, and that’s where bhansali stands out. the screenplay deals with politics, religious and societal issues of the 18th century. the conflicts between the peshwa and the british, the peshwa’s attitudes towards women and his cruelty towards his own wife, are the highlights of the film. at one point he even threatens to stone her, and yet, he marries another wife a month later. the message that bhansali is trying to convey is that knowledge and spirituality is far more important than materialism and politics. bajirao mastani is a humanitarian film, for every character is a soul of a human being.
the sets are stunning, the execution is superb, and the music is magical. bhansali has been at the top of his game throughout bajirao mastani. he has been the same in all his previous films, but he takes it to an entirely new level in this film. bajirao mastani is a landmark in cinematic history. the people of india had long expected that this film would bring bhansali into the modern film fraternity. that he has been able to satisfy everyone with this magnum opus is a testimony to his genius.
bajirao mastani is a must-watch film for everyone. if you’re one of those who have not seen the movie yet, do it as soon as possible. the filmmakers might have failed to bring in a satisfactory ending to the story, but as the young director stated, the journey of the characters made the film worth watching.
