in partnership with the city of paris , and under the patronage of unesco , electronic music pioneer jean-michel jarre teams with french vr start-up vrroom to take us into the new year with a live-stream trailblazing concert-spectacular set in the virtual environment of the planetary landmark, notre-dame de paris. the unique visual world created by jarre in vr will also be the official midnight news image coming from the city of paris.

the performance was set for maison de la radios agorastage, a round outdoor/indoor hybrid space enclosed with a glass ceiling. christophe dupin (system engineer) specified an oval of 17 syva cabinets, plus syva low and some extra sb21s, provided by magnum. jarre was positioned at the top of the oval on an elevated stage, to artistically achieve a zero-degree reference point for the audience, which was seated around him facing the stage. due to social distancing, audiences were limited to 200 people attending each of seven concerts over the three-day festival.

at the end of the concert, jean-michel jarre will meet the participants in person in the virtual earth. he will then open the backstage door of his studio, where he will allow the group of students to learn about his process and creative process. finally, he will invite them to follow him on facebook to learn more about his life and projects.

the starting point for the vr concert is located in a very natural, detailed environment, and it conveys a good level of immersion. the second point of the experience is the exploration of the surface of the moon. this allows the engineers of this vr concert to communicate with each other, and on this scale it was allowed to use a vr headset with stereoscopic images, explained djardin. the third point is the vr acoustic immersion, which allows the audience to be transported into the world of the virtual audio. i especially love the fact that, in the 3d space, each individual is accessible, says djardin. however, he is free to move in the virtual space, and i created this technical challenge for him to solve by creating a 6:1 perspective. the last point is the connection between the physical and virtual worlds: via the avatars.
and then there was the footage itself. the image quality isnt quite as sharp as a game with the same quality setting, but its still pretty crisp. the binaural audio is also quite good, with the thumping bass lines and the swirling sounds of the heavenly machines pleasantly audible. even the strains of classical music are satisfyingly loud on my earbuds.
the oculusin game engine manages to get the blood pumping even in such a still frame. the venue is fantastically convincing, with the curtain, the blades at the front, and the balls of light flowing from the stage into the audience. while i dont think ill be rushing to the next jarre concert in virtual reality, its clear that going back to old school live music isnt an ideal experience.
