The sub-title states what is really behind my decision to use the BRACE approach: the text is written for those who have not yet reached theological university, for those who are not yet ordained and for those with little or no experience as teachers. It is designed to meet all of these requirements, but is also in itself a kind of confession: in three short chapters I set out to describe what a pastor is and is not, to show how this applies to us, and to indicate what it takes to be a pastor. I want to make two points with this brief, but fundamental, book. Firstly, the BRACE approach is integral to our work as pastors, and I have no intention of recreating it elsewhere. Secondly, the BRACE approach is not tied to any particular and changing theological understanding of the job of a pastor. I am therefore using the book as an important way of helping people see this.
Over the past two years, our program in the Brazilian city of São Paulo has used the method we are describing in this book with very good results. The work process was initiated by having twenty practitioners and twenty students create a circle of trust, which has facilitated the understanding of the process by some hundred adults from different contexts. Some are pious women from the Evangelical Church, others are lay people, some are priests, but the majority are self-employed or work for private companies in different socioeconomic sectors. There are businessmen, public servants, lawyers, bankers, teachers, physical and mental health workers. Members of the Evangelical Church, Catholics, Buddhists, Muslims, humanists, as well as atheists and agnostics. We met a soccer player, a pastor, a personal assistant, a university student, a graphic designer, people who work in the night shift and children.
In my opinion, A Tale of Two Stories is very need based and is good for someone who lacks in reading skills. A lot of people pick this book up because it is a story with a positive message. The first thing that I noticed was how simple it was, but this does not make it easy for young readers. I also think that it is very politically correct and wants to make a point about bullying in schools, but its message could also be interpreted in a negative way. I think that the characters could have been a little more authentically portrayed. Overall, it is a story about overcoming different kinds of challenges and learning to put others feelings first.
Teachers opinion: I am of two minds over this book. I do feel that it would be a good choice for a class full of kids who are really struggling with reading and who need a book that is story driven instead of essays, or even worksheet driven.
There is no one, however, who does not recognize how necessary a part of this discipline of the heart is the practical study of the Scriptures. It is seen in the great number of editions of our holy books; in those innumerable studies that people devote themselves to reading and rereading them; in the fruitful meditation that comes from them; in the service that leads them to abandon themselves to them.
In every age of the Church, and especially at this time when the Christian people, despite all the efforts of false teachers, are so much in need of the word of God, many of them, with a very strong conviction that the study of the Bible is their primary business, have turned their entire lives to this task. One might say that it is the only and primary calling for believers: the study of the Scriptures, not of obscure subtleties or of human wisdom, is their study.
