with the recent growing awareness of the important role played by the oceans in human civilization and natural environment, ocean dynamics has been one of the frontiers of applied mathematics and fluid mechanics research. besides the ever-increasing computational power, new techniques and tools are continuously being developed to describe the complex inter-relationship between the seas and atmospheric dynamics.

i want to discuss our recent work on a novel non-grid stochastic spectral aggregation method for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (gc-ms) instrumentation to solve the data processing and memory issue issues in this field.

we have developed our spectral aggregation method based on the idea of hankel singular values of the matrix. we show that this aggregation method can give better evaluation of peak alignment between two matrices. while the traditional spectral aggregation assumes the same number of peaks in two matrices, our method is based on the fact that two matrices share the same peaks. in other words, there are more dominant peaks in each matrix, and we should only consider the common peaks in two matrices as their peaks of different significance.

the scientific instrumentation used to study the modern atmosphere has advanced much faster than capability in instrument design and analysis. as a result, much data analysis is performed off-line, in batch, rather than real-time. in addition, in the last decade, more scientists have become interested in the application of statistics and probability to scientific measurement. a primary result has been the need to organize big data collections and systems into databases which are capable of storing ever-increasing amounts of data. it is also possible that future missions will require scientists to work with ever-increasing amounts of data, in real time, on-board a spacecraft. the type of database solutions needed for this work have proved to be quite complex and are typically difficult to develop and maintain. as a result, there is a significant need for science instrument engineers to be able to develop new database technology and incorporate that into their work.
to help test the stab (station and trail base) industry, nasa has supported a number of contractors with technology demonstration (td) missions. lockheed-martin performed the td mission-1, and is performing the td mission-2 of stab development. the goals of the missions include the development and field testing of new heat shield concepts and materials that are appropriate for deep space flight. the goals of these missions are to: 1) demonstrate the capabilities of the heat shield to withstand the thermal loading environment, and 2) demonstrate the potential for integration with an orion service module. the first year was dedicated to validating the functioning of the stab station and integrated heat shield, and testing both the heat shield and a “proof-of-concept” orion service module.
