in 1973, garson released plantasia, a record not only about plants, but about a wide range of other things. he had recorded the album with his then-girlfriend and wife of five years, theresa anderson. the marriage was in trouble and garson wanted to record an album that would have a positive effect on his family. garson had started his music career playing organ, but had moved on to synthesizers, which at the time were just starting to become popular. the album was released in a variety of different formats, including white vinyl, blue vinyl, cassette, a more limited number of black vinyl, and a limited number of box sets. the first pressing of vinyl sold out on the first day of release, and the second pressing followed just two weeks later.

the album begins with a minimalistic track called hive mind. it’s pleasant and full of a melancholic vibe that is atypical of garson’s music. during the track, theresa asks, “why do the plants listen to you?” and garson replies, “they hear the music.” the original pressing of the album, plantasia, is very well-known among synth nerds. it has a reputation as a classic synth album, because of the sound of the moog, which is heard throughout the record. the moog was introduced to the public in 1972 by robert moog, who had spent years developing the keyboard. the moog had three basic sounds: “chords,” “tuning” and “sequencing.” the moog had no internal storage, so the sound of the synthesizer was based on what the user had stored on the keyboard. this meant that people could create different sounds for their instrument.

plantasia is a retro-themed puzzle game where you plant flowers in a garden to have them bloom, only to cause them to wilt and die. it works much like diner dash in that you must use a limited amount of inventory space to harvest several of the same flower at once and use the time to line up the rest of the flowers in a row. and that’s pretty much it. it’s a nice game with a simple premise and not much else.
plantasia does have some problems. the first is that it gets rather repetitive as your plants wilt and die in a slow yet sure fashion. it can become rather aggravating when you must try to plant a new batch of plants with a withering flower. this happens when you plant a new batch of plants that are all the same color, which forces you to repeat the process. the second issue is that the game is not very forgiving. you plant them in a row, and when they all wilt, the game ends, regardless of the number of flowers remaining. the game also lacks any form of feedback or option to save. i’m sure this is intentional, but it takes a lot of patience to keep trying over and over again.
if you are looking for a relaxing yet challenging puzzle game, plantasia might be just what you are looking for. at least, that’s what i was looking for. i was pleasantly surprised with the game and highly recommend checking it out.
plantasia is a simple game with an interesting concept. the core gameplay is very repetitive and its not very forgiving. but the game is cute and the music is soothing. i’m sure this game will appeal to some people, but it will not appeal to everyone.
