This tutorial describes how to create a snow effect that looks like it’s melted in Photoshop.
Create a New Document
Start Photoshop by opening a new document. In the following tutorial, the’snow’ effect was created in a document with a fixed resolution of 5,000 pixels by 7,500 pixels (5,420×8,570 pixels) and 300 ppi resolution.
Step 1: Create a Landscape Layer
Select the move tool. Shift + click (Windows) or Ctrl + click (Mac) and drag to create a new layer. Alternatively, select Layer | New | Layer From an Existing File… and navigate to the Layer icon in your Photoshop document. This option will create a new layer from an image in your document.
Add a Soft Drop to the New Layer
Step 2: Add a Landscape Photo to the Landscape Layer
Open a photo or a picture of a landscape or scenery that you’d like to use for the background of the snow effect. In the following tutorial, a photo of a lake was used.
Step 3: Adjust the Photo’s Exposure and Brightness
Open the photo in a separate Photoshop document, then right-click the photo (Windows) or Control + click (Mac) the photo and choose Edit | Enhance | Adjust Light/Dark.
In the Adjust Light/Dark dialog, click OK to apply the settings.
This button will also open the Spot Healing Brush that allows users to enhance and correct smaller areas of a photo, such as for this tutorial.
Step 4: Use the Spot Healing Brush to Adjust the Landscape Photo
The Spot Healing Brush can be used to enhance or correct small areas. In the following photo, the Spot Healing Brush was used to brighten and clean up the foreground. However, using the Spot Healing Brush can remove focus from the main area of the photo that you want to make the snow effect.

Step 5: Create a New Layer and Make a Gradient Map
Create a new layer above the original landscape photo by pressing Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows) or Command + Shift + N (Mac) on a Mac.
The new layer will be a background layer, so it will not appear in the final piece. Therefore, you need to create a gradient map in order to place the snow
