One useful aspect of the Photoshop interface is the Object tool. This is a type of vector tool that enables you to create shapes and shapes within shapes. Creating these shapes is known as path-based editing.
In previous versions of Photoshop, you could only use the Pen tool to create paths. This meant that you couldn’t create shapes on a separate layer within a single image unless you used paths. But with the latest version of Photoshop, you can create basic shapes and paths as well as path-based shapes and path-based vector objects such as logos and illustrations.

Figure 2.3C shows a basic rectangle created with the Object tool. These basic shapes allow you to create what is known as closed objects. The resulting shape you create is basically a square and is ideal for most graphic effects, such as the cutting edge of a triangle or the inside of a large shape. You can also blend shapes. This is the most common way to create interesting effects.
The Object tool allows you to draw, create, delete, select, move, and transform the shapes within the object. The process of creating a basic shape is easy.
However, there are two ways to create a complex shape. The easiest way is to make two or more shapes and then combine them. The easiest way to create two basic shapes is to select the rectangle or square and then select a star tool from the toolbox. Figure 2.3D shows an example.

The other way to create a complex shape is to select a path-based element. This can be a line or a text box or any other shape that’s drawn on an image layer. Figure 2.3E shows an example. When you select a path-based shape, you can use the Polygon tool (when you first open a path-based layer, the Polygon tool is selected). If you click inside the path and click once more, you will create a closed shape that supports the path.

President Barack Obama’s executive orders put many federal workers on a path toward a 90-day furlough, eliminating pay and benefits during a time in which the country is struggling through an economic recession.
But some federal workers are opting to take the opportunity to shop and cash in.
One of the options available is the Federal Employees Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), an IRA-like retirement savings plan that allows employees to save for retirement, and on top of that, it’s a “pension substitute” meaning it comes with employer contributions that federal employees have come to depend on as a source of income after retirement.
As a result, many federal workers feel a moral obligation to join the plan, according to a recent USA Today report.
The Federal employees TSP, known as the Thrift Savings Plan, offers a 401(k)-type plan that federal employees can use to save for retirement, and also has a pension substitute option in which it comes with employer contributions that federal employees have come to depend on as a source of income after retirement. As a result, many federal workers feel a moral obligation to join the plan.
At least since the end of 2009, the report continues, the federal government has been contributing 1.5 percent of pay to workers’ TSP accounts each year, as part of the Thrift Savings Plan’s “matching contribution” benefit.
However, during 2010, 2011, and 2012, the percentage of federal workers participating in the TSP rose to 75 percent, 80 percent, and 84 percent, respectively.
Joining the TSP is a win for the worker because it comes with employer contributions, which means there’s a greater chance of winning the so-called “pension substitute.” Federal worker pensions are typically as high as 15 percent of pay, while the TSP’s pension substitute is 10 percent of pay, making it a powerful incentive for federal workers to join the program.
The TSP is, however, not without its downsides. Some federal workers have found that employees who quit their federal job to work for the private sector and then return to federal employment will lose their TSP balances.
Federal workers who are placed on furlough also lose their TSP, although the Treasury Department, which administers the TSP, has stated that it will move to restore the savings of furloughed federal workers in the second

The Gradient Tool allows you to easily create smooth and rich color transitions. Just click an area of the image that you’d like to fade to another, and a gradient will be set up. The gradient is then mapped to a new layer, and your image will magically be faded. While you can download third-party gradients, this tool is great for creating custom gradient patterns.
By default, Photoshop uses white as the start color and black as the end color. For a cool effect, use the Gradient Tool to set up a gradient starting from cyan, and end on pink.

The Pen Tool helps you to quickly draw an image as you see it. The Pen Tool is available in the Express Tools palette, and in the Tools menu (figure 6.6). While the tool is powerful, you will probably rarely use it.

From the Tools palette, the Pen Tool looks like a rectangle with rounded ends. Click the Pen Tool and then click and drag over the image to draw. As you do, Photoshop will create a new layer in the layer palette. Once you are satisfied with your illustration, you can delete the layer to end the drawing.

The Smudge tool is usually used with a brush when smudging an image is required. The tool is available in the Express Tools palette, and in the Tools menu (figure 6.7). Click the Smudge Tool, and use it to rub areas of the image with the brush.

To use the Smudge tool, hold down the Ctrl key (PC: cmd key) while you use the tool. By default, Smudge Tools are gray in color and seem to have rubber at their ends. You can change the color by clicking the Tool Options button in the Tool Options (figure 6.7, image 2).
You can also change the tool’s opacity by clicking the Opacity icon in the tool Options, which is located beneath the tool (figure 6.7, image 3).
Once you are done, simply click the Undo key (Ctrl+Z) to reverse the change, and the image will be left untouched.
