I finally got round to installing this.
I’m not a big fan of anything that queues music, I’d probably listen to music if it was playing. I used to use an app called ZoomRader for this but sadly it doesn’t work now so I’ll be trying Nostalgia.FM out for the first time today.
Personally I’d like it if these things only played stuff that I wanted to hear.
The reason I use Last.fm has always been to let me find out what the popular song was for that week/month/whatever. None of that Nostalgia.FM crap is going to do that for me.
I like to think I listen to music when it’s actually playing. I mean I listen to music sometimes when it’s not playing for example I was listening to “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley and it died after about 20 minutes.
For that reason alone it’s not a good application. Sure, if I’m lying on the floor with headphones on and I’m feeling lazy I might like that Nostalgia.FM experience but most people don’t want a big long list of songs they might have been listening to a few months ago (How many hours have you listened to music you spent time listening to a track that you liked and never listened to it again?).
I also find it annoying that I have to pick what time period I want to listen to because the further back I go the less popular the music is.
I don’t want to hear the same songs over and over again. The sad truth is that today’s popular songs will go the same way as yesterday’s popular songs.
Nostalgia.FM works off of your existing listening history as defined by your Last.fm users and then randomizes it. You need a listening history of at least three weeks to see any results that are above what you are used to.
The point is that people are listening to music that they don’t listen to otherwise — not that they listen to the same old stuff.
