Madness Discography (1979 2005) [mp3@VBR]
the madness discography has significant drawbacks, but some of those drawbacks are also benefits for us. some of the more minor drawbacks are:
- some of the releases are bootlegs and, consequently, there are some problems with the file names. for example, some of the bootlegs have the same names as the releases (this is especially a problem with some of the early bootlegs, such as raw, live 12-27-78). also, some releases have the band’s name spelled with the correctable ellipsis problem, which makes some searches difficult. (there’s also a correction list to help with this problem.)
- the fact that some releases are bootlegs means that they aren’t counted in the band’s official discography. this makes it unclear how many releases the band released. (the band’s first release, introduction, was a bootleg. the french promo was released on a bootleg, although it is not listed as an official madness release in the discography.)
- some of the bootlegs are not high quality, or have been edited, so the versions on the releases may not be the best version of a recording. (the bootlegs aren’t all that bad, so this doesn’t necessarily apply to the releases.)
- the original madness discography is much larger. this means that it has more releases and, in turn, more music. (the other discographies are shorter, so they have less music. this may be a benefit in some respects, but it’s a drawback in others.)
i’ve long believed that the first madness discography (1979-2005) is the most complete release of the early material in a major release. the other two releases are a bit shorter and have less music, but are (in my opinion) more complete. the original madness discography is the only madness release to actually include all of the band’s releases. the other two releases have omitted recordings made without john mcgeoch or mike barson, and have omitted live recordings of the band. (i’m also uncertain as to the completeness of the second discography, especially since it’s unclear if it’s not just a reissue of the third discography.)
