Does a three tier architecture lead to a performance boost?
I’m doing an MVC web application for our university, and I’ve been tasked to apply the three tier architecture. However, I’ve never worked with this type of architecture, so I’m not exactly sure what it means.
What I am familiar with is the three layer architecture, and I’ve read that each layer handles different functions, which is basically what I thought three tier meant. But, in the three tier architecture, there’s a database, an application layer, and a presentation layer, where in the three tier architecture, there’s a user interface, a service layer, and a presentation layer. So, I’m not really sure what it’s purpose is.
I know it’s important to have good architecture, but I’m trying to stay away from over-engineering things and from doing things that won’t help the application at all. So, is a three tier architecture really worth it? Does a three tier architecture improve performance and/or scalability?

There’s a lot of variations and interpretations, so a three-tier architecture may be what your boss wants but maybe not what you want. In practice I’d say that in an MVC-style web application, the user interface is more like the presentation layer because in the MVC model the presentation layer is the part of the application that handles the user interface to the application.
Having said that, many MVC applications use web services (a web service is just an API) to access data for their user interface layer. As a user of a service you are not concerned about the data presentation tier, only about the service.
So here are some reasons to use a three tier architecture:
Interfaces to external systems (e.g. a database) are implemented in the data tier.
Data access can be encapsulated in the data tier.
The data tier may be configured as a library that can be used by many applications.
You can have different data presentation tiers for different sites (e.g. in mobile or desktop).
You can use different data presentation tiers for different parts of the application.
