yet, in truth, it’s more like a vehicle of horror. think about it: the victims are in every position possible. they are wives, husbands, children, parents, friends. when you have your loved ones attacked you think of the pain of it, but if you’re honest, you also think about how terrifying it must be for your assailants. that, more than anything, is what makes the thing so horrifying.
the creators are capable of crafting something so devastatingly effective. for one thing, the series is just masterfully structured. each movie is a showcase for a single character. even in the earlier movies, which are really just a series of wonderfully-filmed set pieces, they’re laced with character. you could line up the four movies in order of how much time the viewer is given to the revealed fate of a character. the first movie, the last key, is at its most terrifying when the heroine is trapped in the attic. that movie is all about getting the heroine out.
the first part is the setting up. you’re building a relationship with the characters. the second, and best, part is the murder. the setup is a fair bit of exposition about the characters, how they’re starting to let loose their initial repressed urges. this is the part where you finally appreciate that they’re dealing with a richly-sophisticated skill set that each of these characters are very familiar with. character beats in horror movies are a thing. now, that’s not to say there’s a lack of suspense, but they are there. in the case of insidious, they’re a thing in the first two movies. but it’s the third one which really deploys the concept. they know what they’re doing, and why. they’re pushing you to a climax. they’re bringing you right to it.

the sequel to insidious is on my doorstop now. last night’s episode of the show was fantastic. as i write this comment, in fact, i just rewatched it. insidious is really one of those shows that i like. it’s right there with ‘the wire’ in terms of how it’s developed the characters and explored the world they live in. it’s a kind of credit to the actors and writers that it has such strength as it approaches the big questions of life and death and happiness. so, i thought i’d write this little blurb about the show here.
the story is about the lambert family. it’s set in the suburbs of philadelphia, and involves a medium and her two sons. her teenage daughter is the one who keeps seeing dead people. and along with that, there’s a good deal of ghosting. there’s also quite a lot of psychological drama, as well as the deeper themes of the nature of grief, and the emptiness of the afterlife. i wrote a review of it here. the show is absolutely brilliant. i really loved it.
