Flying Toasters After Dark 2.0 Screensaver
another screensaver created by berkeley systems, inc. for the macintosh. a group of flying toasters fly around a spinning globe and perform many tricks. the toasters fly around the globe in a sequence that depends on the time of day. when time is dark, the toasters fly around the globe in a circle. when time is light, they fly around the globe in an “s” shape. some of the toasters perform tricks such as spinning, breaking apart, flying over clouds, and spooky shadows. a favorite of mine, the toasters fly together and crash into each other, making a unique sound.
after dark, from berkeley systems, inc., is a set of entertaining screen savers for mac and windows. after dark for windows started off as magic screen saver for windows 2.x. after dark was most famous for its flying toasters screen saver. afterdark was very popular on both the early macintosh computers and windows 3.0, as neither included any kind of screen saver or screen blanker that would help prevent screen burn-in.
now that after dark is on the web, it’s easier than ever to make your own screensavers. the source is available in the sourceforge project at , which has a list of instructions on how to make your own. you could go as far as to make your own artist. there’s something about a small, simple screensaver that just makes a good screensaver. of course, after the fact that somebody already made a simple screensaver that looks like after dark, it’s no longer so simple, but it’s still fun to take a look.
thanks to geoff patterson of berkeley systems for supplying the original source code to after dark, and to brian braun for reviving and rebuilding it in the modern day. after dark is my first successful attempt at an interactive screensaver and a labor of love. i’ve been working on it for over 20 years.
shortly before the release of a windows version of after dark 2.0, the rights reverted to berkeley systems. however, the last version before the rights reverted was released by berkeley systems in 2002. the release that follows here (2.0) is the first to use the new berkeley systems after dark 2.0 engine, instead of the original version. the new engine can support multi-monitor and multiple-desktop configurations, and it has a number of new features and improvements.
if you never had the pleasure of using an after dark screen saver, after dark was a collection of fun screensavers for both macintosh and windows systems. after dark was the first mac screensaver to use 3d graphics, allowing users to fly around a toaster or fly up and down a hill in a spaceship. the screen savers were great-looking and entertaining. in 1995, after dark was bundled with the first apple imac, as well as with the original powerbook and the power mac, and it was sold on cd-rom.
by the end of the 1990s, screen savers were being used to protect computer displays from burn-in, which was becoming a problem on all kinds of displays from crts to lcd monitors and even plasma tvs. in 1999, the first lcd monitor protection screen saver, magic screen saver, was launched. it was an after dark 2.0 clone that would later be succeeded by a series of screen savers called magic screen saver, magic screen saver ii, magic screen saver 3, and magic screen saver 4.
flying toasters after dark 2.0 was a screensaver built around a simple cartoon flying toaster. the toaster was able to swoop around the screen and even swoop into the trash can. it was a fun module to use, and it was one of the first screensavers to incorporate animation. in 1992, berkeley systems, inc. released a brand new macintosh screen saver called flying toasters for macintosh. the screensaver was a collection of flying toasters on a hillside. the screen saver was bundled with the macintosh ii and macintosh se systems in 1992. the toasters would swoop down towards the screen and swoop back up again.
