the gameplay of rta is fair to middling: it never feels so difficult as to stop you, but it’s never so easy that you can succeed just by having a good team. it’s classic and intricate, and with 17 different types of champion, there’s nearly every kind of fighting system you could ask for, from echidna to the assassin. the goal of the game is to fight a bunch of monsters to level up and gain new abilities. the biggest issue with the gameplay is that, while it has multiple skill trees, there are only five different classes of champion. each champion has a collection of one, two, and three abilities, which makes the mastery of just a few abilities you can have very worthwhile. and while each champion should have a decent number of stats to boost, they aren’t all that useful, but do help with the skill points you get.

the graphics are bright, colorful, and look quite good, though a little stiff. they fit in fairly well with the characters, which tend to have very cartoony faces, and the environments are colorful and detailed, but each time you fight the repetitiveness of the background elements can get pretty wearing. this is especially true if you get stuck in a sequence of battles where you have to reload from a save a few levels back. one way to get around this is to load the game on your ps3 when you are ready to play it on the pc. but if you are playing it on the pc, it is worth it to invest in one of the two players, as it can speed up the game immensely.

the chibi-styled fighters have cute, cheerful designs, but it’s hard to remember these guys are flesh and blood. it would be nice to see some of the champions from the rta world, like flint, neil, etc, but that is a minor quibble. if you are looking for more of a story than just “fight some monsters”, then you may want to look elsewhere.

most of the fights in the game take place in outdoor environments, with the player first approaching an enemy and then using an auto-battle feature to call for support from the rest of the team. as the player progresses through the story, he or she will be able to work with multiple types of classes and companions to defeat large groups of enemies. the player also has access to special items to improve his or her class’s fighting abilities.
there are many events that encourage players to work together, such as receiving promotions to a higher level as they complete the optional side quests for the respective classes. the classes can also be leveled to play more powerful in a specific areas. it is possible for the players to switch classes mid-game, by consulting a trainer. there are also multiplayer elements in the game.
the player can gather a group of like-minded adventurers and undertake side quests together, receiving special rewards if they complete them. the player is also able to import characters from previous games and use them to help on the side quests.
one of the things that is really nice about the original rta was that it was a pretty faithful recreation of the character of your hero in the champions series. if your champion was a rich, drug-addled aristocrat, he would act accordingly. if he was a crusty farmer whose surname included “buck,” he would talk like old mountain folk. champions: return to arms only goes so far in capturing the original series’ sense of humor. the only thing that it does with it as good as the first game was adding a meter next to your name. some people liked the idea of an on-screen gauge that goes up while the action happens, which served as a perfect guide for what kind of action you’d be playing with each quest. others hated it.
