Interestingly, Apple seem to have only given users the option to download a DRM M4A. Why is this? I suppose it’s not in their interest to actually start selling these tunes, but there will be workarounds and tweaks, as the Lala downloader includes the iTunes Plus encryption and the M4A format in their source code. And even if we could get around it, I can’t see any major label releasing their music in M4A format.

The downloads continue, and yet Apple have introduced a DRM M4A, so the phone gives up. I’m sure people will try and come up with ways to hack the iTunes Plus DRM in the short-term, but it will end up as another dead-end in the digital landscape.

I downloaded a Busted album last night. The first track, Gold, says it was encoded in the AAC format. Well, as you can see, the track plays in my Mac’s iLife and my iPod. It’s also available in three unprotected formats; WAV, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis. This information seems to be wrong. Yesterday, I followed up on this by looking at the file’s EXIF data. All three formats indicate that the track was encoded using the WMA lossy codec. The track also says that it was encoded in \”iTunes Plus\” format. Since the encoding metadata ends with the file being encoded in \”iTunes Plus\” format, it seems that Apple has applied the \”Plus\” prefix to the AAC file in an attempt to make it appear that it was encoded using an Apple format, even though the music was actually encoded using the WMA format. In any case, I just don’t know what kind of format is being used here, as the file is not playable in either the Mac or the iPod. I tested the file in another computer and also listened to it through an iTunes Music Library on the Mac.

If youre trying to play an AAC file that was not created using Music or downloaded from the iTunes Store: Songs you download from the iTunes Store or import into your library using the AAC encoder are encoded using the MPEG-4 AAC format. Songs in this format play in Music and on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod. Other AAC files that you find on the internet or elsewhere wont play in Music. See Choose import settings.
Its the app that replaced iTunes for streaming music and playing tracks stored locally on your Mac. If you have an Apple Music subscription, you can stream music from that service. But if not, you can still use the Music app to play songs on your Mac or sync music with Apples servers using iTunes Match.
It’s certainly no coincidence that the Beatles catalog began rolling into the iTunes Store on the same week that The Beatles Anthology came out on DVD, Blu-ray and CDs. VanDette is quick to say that Apple didn’t ask him to do it. He said he did it of his own volition after working with their label team to put together an iTunes library for them.
He first listened to the iTunes tracks on his stereo. He said he was surprised to find how well the Beatles were amplified. When he heard the differences, he was immediately sold on the project. He recalls that, \”They sounded so good, I thought, ‘This is great! I have to fix that.\”\”
So VanDette assigned a personality to each level of the loudness range he was tweaking. He described it as \”riding the waves of the music itself,\” meaning that when he adjusted the sound levels up or down in one song, the sound in another song typically reacted to its neighbor. He described the process as \”patience and experience,\” mixing and matching the adjustments. His goal was to leave the desired sound intact while making it a better fit for the digital library the Beatles files were in. VanDette stopped short of saying if the Beatles sound is better on iTunes than it is on CDs. He noted that it is indeed richer and less hissy, and that the whole album sounds more seamless.
