No more than 13 books of Liturgy are available in Oromiffa. Yet, readers are said to be significantly less by virtue of the age-old oral tradition within the church. The Birtukan Project of USA had given the church a boost by publishing the Bible in English. The decision was part of the broader effort to pursue ecumenical efforts and align the various branches of Christianity in harmony and with the same views.

I’ve been working with the Oromo Bible translation for a few years now and have had opportunities to work in 3 different contexts: as a professional translator in our team of translators, as a freelance translator for the ministry, and now on my own project translating the Book of Liturgy. I’d like to share some of the tools and resources that I’ve gathered to help the process along.
One of the biggest challenges in any book project is making sure that the quality of the translation is maintained. To provide a good source of material for my students, I did some research into the quality assurance process of the OLAC Bible. I thought it would be beneficial to share what I learned with the rest of the team. To start, the Book of Liturgy is the first full translation to be translated, and therefore, it’s the first to undergo a process called Proof Reading.
