‘Fiscal cliff’ will be a big problem for St. Louis, one way or another

So if the federal government and the states agree to a plan for a more balanced budget, the result will be a much smaller share of federal revenue that goes to Missouri and a much larger share that goes to the state’s local governments.

By placing more burden on local governments, some Missourians may feel that the state-local fiscal compact is a bad thing. But a state-local fiscal compact is essential to funding local services. In the last decade, Missouri’s general assembly has slashed local governments’ budgets in a variety of ways, and the state is now grappling with a problem of poorly maintained roads and other infrastructure. If a local government can’t afford to maintain its roads, it can’t provide police, fire or emergency services.
