History
The first AutoCAD products were developed by Arthur H. Robinson in 1982 for the Commodore PET computer and were packaged and released in December 1982. The first AutoCAD-compatible software for other computers was for the Apple II and TRS-80 computers, produced by Mike C. Lange and Microfield Software, Inc. released in 1982, with the first version of AutoCAD available for Apple IIGS systems in 1984.
Lansdale and the later Microfield Software were the first to develop a library of technical data that allowed other programmers to plug their programs directly into the AutoCAD user interface. Lange’s Microfield Software released some of the first developer’s tools, such as an AutoLISP interpreter, a utility called AutoCAD Developer’s Utilities that allowed the user to run the program in-context, a compiler for the more complex programming language, and a WYSIWYG view of the drawings. The later version of AutoCAD allowed for four users in AutoCAD only. In 1987, Corel and Microfield introduced a multi-user version of AutoCAD that allowed more than one user to work at the same time on AutoCAD drawings, with a single DOS window to view all of the users’ drawings simultaneously. In 1987, Microfield also produced a version of AutoCAD for Apple Macintosh computers.
In 1987, Autodesk was formed as a result of a merger between Corel and microfield, which led to a new company identity that was also used for AutoCAD.
In April 1991, AutoCAD was updated to create 3D drawings.
In 1992, AutoCAD went to 3D graphics (Solid Model), and in 1994 the company released their first commercial product—AutoCAD for Windows.
In 1997, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT, an affordable but simplified version of AutoCAD. Autodesk also updated the software’s drawing features to allow for larger drawings.

Add-in products have been a successful product category, both for vendors and end users. In addition to the increasing popularity of Microsoft Office in the mid-1990s, there were a large number of companies who created add-ins for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For example, Arcadia Software introduced the first AutoCAD add-in, PlotPoint, in November 1989. The product allowed importing and exporting AutoCAD drawings to Word for word processing, and to Excel for spreadsheets. Popular add-ins included Arcadia’s PlotPoint, FastDraw, MDS which was later acquired by Corel Corporation, and a number of others such as Cero, Inventor Pro, and HPGraph.
In addition to the plugins for MS Office, AutoCAD offered a large number of other add-ins that provided AutoCAD functionality to non-AutoCAD software. One example of this is CreoPlan, which was the most popular AutoCAD add-in until Windows Vista was released. The plugin allowed creating orthographic and perspective views from AutoCAD drawings, which were then exported to CreoPlan for exporting to a Windows 3D CAD (CADx) file format. CreoPlan was later sold to Mentor Graphics Corporation. CreoPlan was later called CreoPlan, Mentor CreoPlan, and is now called CreoView.
Add-ins have been very successful in the market place. In 2007, after the release of AutoCAD 2008, AutoCAD has the most add-ins of any other CAD application. In 2008, IDC reported that there were over 5,000 AutoCAD add-ins in the market place. AutoCAD has a total of over 700 add-ins in the market place.
