now, so many years later, the film has achieved a cult status. however, lead actor madhavan had reservations about going forward in his film career post alaipayuthey wrap. in an earlier chat, quoted by daily times, speaking about the same, madhavan had said, i remember i told mani ratnam that after his film alaipayuthey that i dont think i will be acting because it was like where do you go, what do you do, especially when you dont have a background in the industry. but every time i saw reviews, i realised this looks like a life-long profession.the story is told through the protagonist murugesan (pasupathy), who recalls his childhood in virudhunagar town. his father is a butcher who works hard to bring up his four children (two boys and two girls) and have a happy family. murugesan dotes on his younger brother kathir, and his weakness, like any other adolescent, is a love for movies (especially mgr films) that are screened in a local theatre. one day, life changes for murugesan when his father catches him red-handed from the theatre after he bunks school. murugesan is severely punished and runs away from home, taking money and jewels.
along the way, murugesan gets sidetracked from his intended destination of chennai by an mgr movie poster. he is shown watching several mgr shows, buying a change of clothes, and eating a hearty meal with his ill-gotten money. after spending the night at local temple, he wakes up to find his money and other possessions missing. murugesan is then taken under the wings of a theatre projectionist in a nearby town. slowly, the theatre becomes his home.

the key factors that made the film so popular are: the superb performances of rahul bose, mani ratnam and special appearance by the late actress vyjayanthimala, this is the first major film appearance by the hindi film beauty. some other popular actors have also performed well, but they are no match for the first time major stars from tamil nadu. the music and background score, apart from the popular songs by kalyan, are great.
mani ratnam has lived in the musical environment of chennai for most of his working life. the genial director has never missed a chance to suggest the other world, the world of music, to his finest compositions. the songs of the film, totally dominated by song and dance sequences, are laced with the spirit and tunes of tamil folk songs. they incorporate songs by composers kamalkannan, vidyasagar and sankar ganesh. the songs speak about the’swayamvar’ tradition and how it is the only answer to human-sorrow.
the story is full of the twists and turns of the human mind. vyjayanthimala, who has delivered superb performances throughout the film, plays a grandmother-like character and utters several great dialogues. the movie also explores problems of people who get trapped by the middle class life.
sathiya (kochupillai bose) is an it executive in bangalore. his ambitions to climb the corporate ladder become a nightmare for him. his bosses fight for their survival and leave him behind. his friends are clueless that he is in big trouble. his life soon becomes a nightmare. one day he gets a call from his manager at syntel. he comes to chennai to find out the reason behind his promotion and then decides to start a new life.
