the fundamentalist leadership decided to make abortion a major issue at the sbc’s annual meeting, held in st. louis, missouri, in june of 1981. president rogers was elected, a major fundamentalist win; at the same time, the messengers appointed a new committee on conscience and morals. (9) its first task was to campaign for the election of the new president. this was a conservative’s dream come true as the election of the radical adrian rogers heightened the conservative camp’s hopes of gaining a majority in the convention.
the fundamentalist leadership, however, was not satisfied with only gaining the presidency. they also wanted to control the policy committee. to this end, they recruited a new member, rev. dale r. gilbert, to head up the conservative activist group concerned christians for life. (10) concerned christians for life sought to engage the entire sbc in a campaign to obtain a new resolution on abortion. the strategy was to have the resolution adopted at the convention and then have it translated into policy at the national level. the plan worked as, on june 24, 1981, the ad hoc committee on public affairs submitted a resolution to the committee on conscience and morals which called for a change in the denomination’s position on abortion.
joyce rogers would not be denied, and she married adrian rogers in 1971, and together they founded the reverend adrian rogers-joyce rogers ministries. joyce rogers was a highly successful speaker who shared her views on women and their roles within conservative christianity. her views were set forth in a booklet, the biblical woman, (9) and in a three-hour seminar, the place of a woman in god’s plan.
joyce rogers’ teachings resonated with women who were at the forefront of what would become a movement against women’s ordination. women had been involved in conservative christianity since the late 1960s. one of the first women’s conferences was held in 1968 in los angeles by the women’s missionary movement of the sbc. (10) women had sought ordination since the 1850s, with william carey and florence scofield leading the way. (11) a female deaconess named muriel king cannon had been ordained in 1968, but women’s ordination was not formally addressed until 1973, when a core group of conservative women, including laverna butler, started the advocates for baptist women in the church. (12) the sbc received almost $3,000,000 from the 1976 general convention to begin a national campaign against women’s ordination. the campaign was led by its president, adrian rogers, and his wife joyce rogers. (13) a study group was formed in 1978 and charged with addressing the issue of women’s ordination. it recommended a resolution that would “abolish the office of deaconess.” (14) only the denomination’s general association voted against the resolution. (15) the study group also recommended a resolution to “abolish the office of elder.” that resolution passed with a smaller percentage of the vote. (16) the study group then recommended “a resolution prohibiting any candidate for any of the highest positions of the church from being able to hold any office of the husband or the wife of the candidate.” (17) that resolution passed with a majority of votes, and it was a foreshadowing of the resolutions that would follow. the study group also recommended that the denomination “must vote against the ordination of women.” (18) with that recommendation, the sbc passed the 1973 statement on the order of eldership, which “denied the ordination of women to the office of elder” (19) and the 1988 statement on the ordination of women, which “denied the right of any man to ordain any woman to the office of elder in the church.” (20) the sbc recommended that women “must not be allowed to teach” or “to be appointed to pastoral care positions.” (21) the denomination recommended that women “must not be allowed to have a voice in policy making.” (22) they recommended that women “must not be allowed to speak in a public setting at church.” (23) they recommended that women “must not be permitted to hold any leadership position in the church.” (24) they recommended that women “must not be allowed to be ordained to the office of elder.” (25) they recommended that women “must not be allowed to speak from the pulpit.” (26) they recommended that women “must not be allowed to exercise pastorates.” (27) they recommended that women “must not be permitted to be candidates for any of the highest offices of the church.” (28) in the late 1980s, a motion was introduced to elect a conservative woman to the sbc’s presidency, but it was defeated.
