One of the great contributions of Mendel’s research was the
First Mendelian characterisation of a trait was exhibited by a grapevine mutant with small, sweet seeds and normal, sour seeds. Precisely the same effect is observed in the mutant phenotype which a male plant develops: a reduced length of the vine. In the same way as in the fruit it occurred, Mendel identified both the male and female parents and worked out that the trait was hereditable (asexually as well as sexually). No less remarkably, Mendel was able to demonstrate that this trait was controlled by a single genetic unit and that in each plant there were a mere two different alleles at that locus (allelic determinants).
This pioneering study and others such as those of Niswander, Mendel’s first student, and Gregor Johann Mendel, who followed Mendel in the garden at the monastery at, are a constant reminder that Mendel’s work was to change the course of modern biology. Two of Mendel’s students, Matthias Schleiden and Rudolf Virchow, carried out important contributions to science. Their work on cell respiration laid the basis for the present-day view of cellular metabolism. They also published an important work on the relationship between morphology and heredity in animals. The latter work was supported by Hermann Kolbe, with whom Mendel also collaborated at the monastery.
